Sue E, Ellis:
Sue Espey Ellis passed away peacefully at home in the loving arms of her boyfriend on July 9, 2024, after battling a rare form of cancer.
Sue was a former Del Oro Groves resident, friend of many in the neighborhood and an avid Bunco player with our neighborhood June's Bunco Gals group.
Born on March 4, 1966, in Dunedin, FL, she was a proud Florida native. Raised in Clearwater, she attended Plumb Elementary, Oak Grove Middle, and Clearwater High School, graduating in 1984. Sue went on to continue her education at Florida State University, graduating with a BS in Mass Communication and Advertising in 1988. She worked in advertising and marketing before moving into sales at Tech Data (1993-2005), where she met many lifelong friends, including former husband, Mark. Sue and Mark were married in 2003 and in 2005 they welcomed their pride and joy, son Johnathan, to the family. While on maternity leave, Sue decided to make a life change and began her very successful real estate career that same year. She loved serving her clients and friends in this capacity. She enjoyed working with a wide variety of people and focused on meeting their needs, whether they were a first-time buyer or were searching for a fantastic luxury home. It was the clients who mattered most to Sue, not the size of their budget. She dreamed of retiring as a rental agent, using her rental properties for income. Sue was a lifelong member of Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and on multiple committees. While serving her Peace community, she became involved in working with the homeless population in downtown Clearwater and soon became the head of the cold weather shelter when it was housed at Peace Memorial. There she started a very successful clothing closet for those in need and encouraged donations, especially winter clothes. Sue was a member of her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority alumni group, the Junior League of Clearwater, numerous real estate organizations, and past president of her neighborhood association. She loved being involved with her community. When Sue was diagnosed with BCOR Sarcoma in 2021, she immediately began the fight of her life. She never shied away from a challenge and took this one on with tremendous vigor, sharing her journey along the way with the optimism she was known for. As soon as her strenuous treatment regimen allowed for a break, she embarked on the trip of her dreams. She purchased a travel van, traveling up the East Coast to Nova Scotia, making multiple stops visiting with friends and family along the way. She returned home after 6 weeks and continued treatments and working with her beloved clients until her very last day. Sue is survived by her son, Johnathan, who will remain in Clearwater and continue his training to become a pilot, her mother, Martha Espey, sister, Joy Miller (Tom, Kate, Keri), and the love of her life, Brian Leahy. Sue will be remembered as a fun-loving spirit who adored live music, trivia nights, bonfires, craft beer, being outdoors, kayaking, traveling, and sports. She was a loyal friend and family member and lived life to its fullest. A deep hole is left in the hearts of all who loved her. A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, July 27, 11:00 am at Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church, 110 S. Fort Harrison Ave. We kindly ask that any donations you may wish to make be made to your favorite homeless charity or to Peace Memorial on behalf of Sue.

John B. "J.B." Johnson Jr., 94, passed away March 7, 2016. Born December 4, 1922 in Winston Salem, NC to parents, Lemma and J.B. Johnson, Sr. J.B. was preceded in death by his loving wife Sarah of 65 years. At the age of two the family moved to Asheville, NC and was educated in the school system, graduating from Lee Edwards High. A lover of baseball and a good player, he received a scholarship to oak ridge institute and was the team's outstanding pitcher. In September 1942 JB joined the Army Air Corps. His military duty included aviation mechanics school in Amarillo, Texas B24 training in San Diego, CA, Yale University for engineering school and completing the aviation cadet program and flying B25s. At war's end he attended Georgia Tech for a one semester refresher course and in 1946 he signed a baseball contract with the Newnan Browns, a newly formed team in the newly formed Georgia Alabama league. Here again he was the outstanding pitcher in the league winning 20 and losing 8. One outstanding feat was pitching a double header not allowing any runs, a baseball record for quite some time. Apparently the record caught the eyes of the Detroit Tigers since they purchased his contract. J.B.’s baseball career spanned 4 years playing in various leagues from Class A to Class D in what is called the minor leagues.
In 1946 he went to work for Fireman's Fund insurance company in Atlanta, GA. In 1949 he was transferred to Charlotte, NC and in 1964 transferred to Tampa as resident vice president and Florida manager. He retired in 1985 after 38 years with the company, the last 20 years in Tampa. He and his wife chose Clearwater as home. In Charlotte he assisted in organizing little league baseball.
He was president of the Del Oro Groves Homeowners Assoc. for three years; a life member of the Professional Baseball Players of America. During his 20 years he was very proud of his branch and several times won his company's highest award known as "Tip of the Hat". He always said he had wonderful employees. He retired in 1985 after 38 years of service.
Upon retiring in 1985 he volunteered to serve on a city board and was appointed to the planning & zoning board. He served six years and five of the years as chairman. After his two terms ended he was appointed to the Maas Brothers task force. In 1991 he decided to seek a seat on the commission and was defeated by Art Degan. After the defeat J.B. was appointed to the development code adjustment board and in 1995 decided to again seek a commission seat. This time he was successful serving two terms with five of the six years as vice mayor. Later he was appointed to serve for two commissioners who resigned. As a commissioner he always gave consideration to "will the decision benefit our city" and you may "disagree'' but you do not have to be disagreeable. J.B. served on many city boards with the last one being the community development board. Recently the city hall conference room was named for him.
He has served on the area agency on aging board of Pasco¬ Pinellas, emeritus of the Salvation Army board, Senior Citizens board, Prospect Towers board and a member of Star Lodge 78. He worked part time for Biltmore construction as business development representative. J.B. was a member of Dunedin Country Club for eight years and since 1995 a member of Clearwater Country Club.
J.B. has been a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church since 1966 and served on the elders and deacon boards as well as other important positions.
He is survived by one sister, Elizabeth and her husband Joe in Newnan, GA and one sister-in-law, Caroline Spradlin in Chatham, VA and many nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews. www.mossfeasterclearwater.com

Obituary for Helen Wagner Anderson
Always ahead of her time, Helen Wagner Anderson walked the earth with the grace, intelligence, wit and kindness of a citizen of the universe. On sight, one recognized her innate dignity and goodness. The most grateful beneficiaries of these attributes were her three devoted daughters, to whom she taught the love of learning and beauty, as well as an understanding of the diverse cultures she tried to show them. Leading by example, she won a Fiction Writing award for recording her very private life story.
Skipping two years of primary education for academic excellence, Helen left her family home at age 15 to become a registered nurse in Brooklyn, New York prior to enlisting in the army during World War II. Thereafter, she continued to travel numerous times to four continents and participated in the Retired Officer’s Wives and Widows Club.
Helen never turned away from any need she saw, earning the Lifetime Service Award from the Pinellas County Commissioners in 1999 and Certificates of Appreciation from the Pinellas County Volunteer Service Program and the Florida International Museum. She also served as one of the original eight cornerstone Pinellas County trail park rangers, originating the “information station” in downtown Dunedin, delivered Meals on Wheels, and participated in endless campaigns for the heart and cancer societies and other causes.
A striking beauty herself, Helen loved flower arranging and became an officer in the Dunedin Garden Club. She could be seen in her later years pampering her lawn and walking daily on the Ream Wilson Trail with Simon and Peter, her two beloved white bichons.

“Been there and gone…had a good time.” That is how William Henry Anderson, Jr. of Clearwater, Florida wanted to be remembered. At 96, he died June 14, 2012, at his home of over forty years surrounded by his three surviving daughters, Ingrid Anderson, Katy Anderson Delise, and Frances A. Walker.
Raised in a small Georgia town during the depression, Henry, as most knew him, excelled in athletics and academics. With the support of his sister, he trained and began a promising career as a bookkeeper with Armour and Company—only to become immersed in WW II. After Army officer candidate school, he served in the Asian-Pacific campaign, traveling to the Phillipines, Hawaii, New Zealand, and nearby islands, as well as the Korean War. He received the Bronze Star Medal and after twenty years retired to Florida as a lieutenant colonel. There he obtained a masters degree in history and began a second career, working for the State of Florida in what was then the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. After a second retirement he spent the majority of his time at the famed Golf Course B at MacDill AFB.
Two years ago his always excellent health began to decline when his wife of sixty years died. He and his neighbor would drive an hour and a half in his Buick to the Florida National Cemetery to place red roses on their wives’ graves every week. He filled the outings with war stories and the traditional lunch stop at Denny’s off S.R. 54.
He was loved and will be dearly missed. But he did indeed have a good life.
